Poeta británico. Durante toda su vida padeció de inestabilidad mental y se vio acosado por crisis espirituales. Su Olney Hymns (1779; con John Newton), libro de poesía devota, contiene algunos cantos que todavía se cuentan entre los preferidos de los protestantes ingleses. The Task [La tarea] (1785), largo poema discursivo que tiene por fin "elogiar la tranquilidad del mundo rural, fue un éxito inmediato. Cowper es autor de numerosos poemas líricos breves y melodiosos, incluso humorísticos, y se lo considera uno de los mejores escritores ingleses. En sus obras, a menudo centradas en las tareas cotidianas del campo, aportó franqueza y humanitarismo a la poesía de la naturaleza del s. XVIII, lo que hace de él un precursor del romanticismo.
